Ancestral Entanglements

In today’s blog, I’m continuing the Movements of the Family Soul series.

In a previous article, we explored the Ancestral Soul Field—the invisible field of connection that links us to those who came before us and quietly shapes many of the patterns, emotions, and experiences we encounter throughout our lives.

In this article, we’re taking the next step by exploring one of the most fascinating and compassionate principles within Family Constellation work: Invisible Loyalties.

These hidden bonds often explain why we repeat patterns we desperately want to change and reveal that beneath many of our struggles lies something surprisingly beautiful—the desire to love and belong.

In this article, we’ll explore:

  • What Invisible Loyalties are and how they unconsciously shape our emotions, relationships, health, career, and life choices.
  • Why ancestral entanglements form, revealing how love, belonging, and our deepest survival instincts can lead us to carry burdens that never belonged to us.
  • How seemingly unrelated struggles often share the same ancestral roots, offering a completely new perspective on healing and transformation.
  • A simple reflective practice to help you begin recognizing your own invisible loyalties and gently release what no longer needs to be carried.

Why Would Anyone Unconsciously Choose Suffering?

If there is one question I have been asked more than any other throughout my twenty years of facilitating Family Constellations, it is this:

Why would anyone unconsciously choose suffering?

It’s a reasonable question. If we all long for happiness, connection, vitality, and fulfilment, why would we repeatedly find ourselves drawn toward experiences that limit us? Why do relationship patterns repeat generation after generation? Why do some people sabotage success just as life begins to flourish? Why do feelings of anxiety, grief, guilt, or exhaustion sometimes appear without any obvious explanation?

Most approaches to healing begin by asking, “What’s wrong with me?”

Family Constellation work asks a very different question:

“Who or what might I be loving?”

The first time I encountered this perspective, it completely changed the way I understood human behaviour. Rather than seeing suffering as evidence that something was broken within us, I began to see it as something far more compassionate. Beneath many of the struggles we experience is not weakness, failure, or dysfunction.

Beneath them is love.

A deep, instinctive, often unconscious love that longs for belonging within the family system.

How Invisible Loyalties Are Formed

To understand how this happens, we first need to remember the concept of the Family Soul.

The Family Soul is a living system that connects everyone who belongs to a family across generations. Within that field, experiences continue to move until they are acknowledged, included, and allowed to find their natural place. When something remains unresolved, later generations may begin to resonate with it, much like two tuning forks vibrating at the same frequency.

This resonance creates what Family Constellations calls ancestral entanglements.

I often describe ancestral entanglements as invisible threads woven through the generations.

Imagine walking through your life believing every choice you make is entirely your own, while beneath the surface gentle threads are quietly pulling you toward familiar experiences. You may repeatedly find yourself attracting the same kind of relationships, encountering the same disappointments, struggling with the same fears, or feeling emotions that seem far larger than the present moment deserves.

From the outside, these patterns appear frustrating and mysterious.

From the perspective of the Family Soul, they are expressions of loyalty.

The remarkable thing is that these loyalties rarely arise because we consciously decide to carry them. They begin much earlier, at a time when love and survival are inseparable.

Every child enters the world completely dependent upon those who came before them. Before we understand language, before we develop beliefs about ourselves or the world, our nervous system knows one thing with absolute certainty:

I must belong.

Belonging is survival.

Without parents or caregivers, an infant cannot live. Our deepest instincts are therefore organised around maintaining connection with our family. Long before we develop conscious awareness, we begin adapting ourselves in ways that preserve that bond.

Children are extraordinary in their willingness to love.

If a parent is burdened by grief, a child may unconsciously carry some of that sadness. If a family member has been forgotten or excluded, another child may identify with that person without ever knowing their story. If suffering exists within the family system, a child may silently conclude, “Perhaps if I carry some of this too, everyone will be a little lighter.”

Of course, this is never a conscious thought.

It is the innocent language of love.

And because it happens beneath our awareness, it can remain active throughout our entire lives.

This is why Family Constellation work is so compassionate. Rather than asking us to fight our patterns, it invites us to understand the love that created them.

How Invisible Loyalties Show Up

Over the years I have watched these invisible loyalties express themselves in countless different ways.

I have worked with a woman living with profound depression who eventually discovered she was unconsciously carrying the grief surrounding siblings her mother had miscarried before and after her birth. Through the language of the Family Soul, she was trying to include those children by carrying the sadness that had never been fully acknowledged.

I have worked with a man whose struggle with addiction reflected generations of men within his family who had gradually lost their place, their dignity, and their strength. His healing began not by battling the addiction itself, but by reconnecting with the generations of men who stood behind him and allowing himself to receive their strength rather than unconsciously carrying their pain.

I’ve sat with couples who desperately wanted to love one another yet found themselves trapped in endless cycles of conflict, only to discover they were replaying the unresolved dynamics of their parents and grandparents rather than truly meeting one another in the present.

I’ve supported women exhausted by chronic fatigue who discovered that beneath their physical depletion lay a much deeper inability to receive life itself because their earliest bond with their mother had been interrupted.

I’ve worked with gifted entrepreneurs who longed to share their work with the world but became terrified whenever success arrived because somewhere within the family system visibility had once meant danger, persecution, or devastating loss.

I’ve witnessed survivors of abuse who repeatedly found themselves becoming everyone’s emotional punching bag, not because they lacked strength, but because they remained unconsciously entangled with a victim-perpetrator dynamic that had travelled through generations.

I’ve also worked with couples longing to bring a child into the world who discovered they first needed to reclaim the life force that had become invested in carrying ancestral burdens before there was enough energy available to create new life.

At first glance, these appear to be completely different problems.

  • Depression
  • Addiction
  • Relationship conflict
  • Chronic illness
  • Career struggles
  • Trauma
  • Infertility

Yet from the perspective of the Family Soul, they often arise from the same underlying movement.

An invisible loyalty asking to be seen.

Healing Begins with Awareness

This is why Family Constellation work can create such profound shifts.

Rather than focusing exclusively on changing behaviour, we gently uncover the hidden movement of love beneath the pattern. Once that movement becomes visible, something remarkable begins to happen.

The loyalty no longer needs to remain unconscious because it has been honoured.

One of the greatest misunderstandings I encounter is the belief that acknowledging these loyalties somehow blames our ancestors or keeps us trapped in the past.

The opposite is true.

This work is deeply respectful.

Our ancestors did the best they could with the resources, awareness, and circumstances available to them. Many survived wars, famine, poverty, discrimination, illness, forced migration, and unimaginable losses. They carried burdens that most of us can scarcely imagine.

Family Constellation work does not ask us to judge them.

It asks us to honour them.

And from that place of honour, something extraordinary becomes possible.

We begin to realise that helping our family does not require repeating their suffering.

In fact, continuing to suffer on behalf of those who came before us rarely brings healing to anyone.

The greatest gift we can offer our ancestors is to fully receive the life they passed on to us and allow that life to move forward more freely than it could before.

This is where invisible loyalties begin to transform.

Not because we reject them.

Not because we force ourselves to change.

But because we finally recognise the love that has always been beneath them and gently release ourselves from carrying what never truly belonged to us.

A Reflection for Your Own Journey

Take a few slow breaths and bring to mind one area of your life that seems to repeat itself. Perhaps it’s a relationship pattern, a health challenge, financial struggle, fear of success, people-pleasing, or a feeling that somehow life always returns to the same familiar place.

Without trying to solve it, simply become curious.

Ask yourself:

If this pattern were an expression of love, who or what might I be loving?

Notice whatever comes to mind.

You don’t need certainty.

You don’t need evidence.

Simply allow your intuition to respond.

Then, if it feels right, place a hand over your heart and quietly repeat these words:

Dear family,

I see the love beneath these invisible loyalties.

Thank you for all that has been given to me.

With love and respect, I allow each of you to carry what belongs to you.

And I allow myself to carry what belongs to me.

I honour your journey by fully living my own.

I belong.

And because I belong, I am free to embrace the life that has been passed to me.

Take one final breath and simply notice what has shifted.

Perhaps nothing feels different at all.

Perhaps you feel lighter.

Perhaps a memory has surfaced, or an emotion has softened.

Whatever your experience, trust that awareness itself is the first movement toward healing.
